The caption reads "Find a wild place where you can sense the wonder and beauty of nature"
"Only when one comes to listen, only when one is aware and still, can things be seen and heard. Everyone has a listening point somewhere. ... someplace of quiet where the universe can be contemplated with awe." wrote Sigurd Olson. Thoreau wrote,“We must go out and re-ally ourselves to Nature every day. “ Dave Foreman said that environmentalists and conservationists need to regularly go out and experience wild places.
When I go canoeing on the northwood lakes, the white pine and and red pines stick up above the treetops. Particular ones help me orient myself so I can find my way.
Muir wrote, "The mountains are calling, and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly." Sigurd Olson also wrote “Without love of the land, conservation lacks meaning or purpose, for only in deep and inherent feeling for the land can there be dedication in preserving it.”
White pine forests originally covered most of the north east and north central US, but most were logged. 250,000 white pines were cut and sent to Chicago in a just one year. Some people cared and campaigned successfully to protect some old growth forests-these are now in parks and wilderness areas. White pines provide food and shelter for birds, insects, and small mammals.
